It is an orthorhombic aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 7.
It shows various shades of blue, such as purplish-blue, blue, and brownish blue, but it is a rare mineral that shows pleochroism in which the axis color changes to violet when the direction is changed. For this reason, it is also known as cordialite and dichroite.
There is a legend that the Norse Vikings used the birefringence of iolite slices as a polarizer to check the position of the sun before sailing. It is also a Stone that has a meaning such as giving.
