Introduction
Ceramics Meet Glass
Glass and ceramic vessels are both made with kilns. Over a century, these industries became regional specialties in Taiwan, as hubs of ceramics and glass production have developed in New Taipei City and Hsinchu City, respectively. As Taiwan's industries have transformed since the 198os, creative elements have been introduced into traditional industries, which began to thrive in cultural felds with new artistic assets. Now glass and ceramic vessels are useful everyday items as well as artistic media.
With overlaps in materials, techniques, and functionalities, glass and ceramics are like brothers born of the kiln. From the perspective of material science, glass is a kind of ceramic material in the general sense, and the glaze on ceramic surfaces is a kind of glass. Ceramics are usually made from opaque materials that go through forming, drying, and fring processes. Glass is mostly characterized by its transparency. It is made from silicon oxide (quartz) and, unlike the room-temperature forming process for ceramics, formed at high temperatures, which is also required by the glazing process of ceramics. After fring, ceramic materials are hard and resistant to abrasion, heat, and corrosion.
Its useful optical, thermal, and electromagnetic properties give them tremendous potential. Glaze is the glassy skin for ceramics and a key dimension of creative expression in ceramic art. On the other hand, the transparency, translucence, opaqueness, and reflective as well as refractive properties present a different quality of beauty from ceramics. In the glass section of this exhibition, we explore the wide range of artistic expressions in glass, beginning with techniques, to see how glass artists create glass vessels both practical and culturally rich, with refned mastery. For the ceramics section, we focus on glazing expressions of modern ceramic art and explore how ceramic artists utilize the glassy element of glaze, inspired by modern art, to break new ground in merging Eastern and Western glazing styles.
This exhibition is helped by Glass Museum of Hsinchu City, who provided us with glass art from Hsinchu and other places. We are also grateful for the ceramic artists of New Taipei City who offered their art. Moreover, we thank Professor Hsiao Ming-tun, Chair of National Tsing Hua University Department of Arts and Design and Professor Liou Chen-Chou of National Taiwan University of Arts Department of Crafts and Design, whose research gave us insight into the techniques of glass and ceramic arts, which enhanced our appreciation of the works and of the interesting relationship between glass and ceramics.
