1915 年生，日本工业设计代表人物之一。柳宗理毕业于日本艺术学院 (为现今东京国立艺术音乐大学) 于西元 1950 年成立了 Yanagi(柳) 设计机构，1957 年其蝴蝶椅产品赢得意大利米兰金奖。
柳宗理认为双手更能传递出产品的温度与想法，用手去感受，手上便会有答案。每件器皿都经过精密的计算并亲手调整，设计造型前都应当先考虑需求与机能。
若论当代日本最受景仰也最具代表性的设计巨匠，当非柳宗理莫属，柳宗理的不锈钢家庭用品系列更是获得日本工业设计界最高荣誉的 good design 赏，可称得上是全球最受人景仰的设计大师之一。
