A Forged Horseshoe
In ancient times, the blacksmith was considered one of the most respected people in the village. He shooed horses, and his work depended on whether the harvest would be fed in the winter of the family.
It was believed that he communicated with white and dark forces, and his work could both reward and punish. The smith was always invited to weddings, and people tried to placate him so that he might "bind" the bride and groom to a happy family life. The bride and groom forged rings, jewelry, and a horseshoe for good luck.
A horseshoe is a household amulet in many cultures. People are still arguing about how to hang a horseshoe - horns up or horns down? In fact, no matter how you hang it up, there will be happiness. Why? Because iron was very expensive before and to find a horseshoe on the road meant prosperity for the family - a horseshoe was sold, exchanged for grain, or a small axe or a knife could be forged from it.
