墨西哥政治风起云涌，在堪称史上最动荡时期的背景下，la Calavera de la Catrina 之形象就在墨西哥刻版画家何塞•瓜达卢佩•波萨达笔下诞生。“catrina”意思是“花花公主”，纤细的身段、穿着华丽却满是骷髅图案的女装，是她的着名的象征，亦是墨西哥亡灵节重要的主角。墨西哥对于死亡充分表现人的价值与哲学观念，因此，他们欢欣鼓舞地庆祝生命周期的完成，迎接生者与死者的团聚。在法国学者让•夏洛特的推广下，卡翠娜不仅是亡灵节的表征，更是墨西哥艺术的代表之一。
The years between 1910 and 1940 marked great political upheavals in Mexico. In this time La Calavera Catrina was created by the hand of José Guadalupe Posada. La Catrina means dapper, elegant: her slender body and skull-laden dress are symbols both of her and of the Day of the Dead. Mexican culture reflects deep values of human life, celebrating life coming to fruition and the intersections of the living and the dead. Jean Charlot brough her to the attention of the public not only as a symbol of the Day of the Dead, but also as an icon of Mexican arts.
